THE POLICE – COMMUNITY PROJECT

One of the areas we visited in Uganda was Kasese. Geographically, it is adjacent to the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. There have been several terrorist attacks across the border with several Ugandans killed. This has left an unusually higher number of orphans that need our help. Understandably, it has also caused tensions and suspicions between the police and the Local community.

There is no ‘quick fix’ for this problem; but BUPECHIU can help. We are aiming to train a selected group of police officers how to teach the BUPECHIU education program to children. These officers would then go into the local schools to lead BUPECHIU activities with the children.

The intention is that this will foster better relationships and develop trust between the police officers and the community. Similar strategies have worked in communities in the UK, albeit under very different circumstances.

If this project is successful, it could be a model for other districts in Uganda.
